UN-NYG Visits Seibersdorf Safeguards Laboratories

On 8 September, 20 UN-NYG members visited the IAEA’s safeguards laboratory facilities at Seibersdorf in Lower Austria, a 45-minute drive from the VIC. After lunch at the cafeteria, they were introduced to the Office of Safeguards Analytical Services by acting Director Veena Tikare.

Everyone was able to visit the Environmental Sample Laboratory (ESL), in which samples collected by IAEA inspectors in the field are analyzed for signs of contamination, and the Nuclear Materials Laboratory (NML), which processes declared nuclear materials from operating power reactors and other sites. Most participants had never visited Seibersdorf before, and this trip was a unique way to learn more about the IAEA’s key role in the nuclear field.
